What is Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)



Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop by following traumatic situation that put your safety in danger or makes you feel helpless. Most of the time people associated PTSD with battle scarred soldiers and military combat is the most cause in men and any overwhelm life.PTSD can affect those people who personally experience the disaster, those who witness it and those who pick up after they disaster, it can include emergency workers and police officers.That is possible to occur in the family members or friends of those who are affected or went through the real trauma.

Traumatic events that can cause PTSD are as follows:

  • ·         Rape
  • ·         War
  • ·         Kidnapping
  • ·         Terrorists
  • ·         Plane or car crash
  • ·         Sexual or physical abuse
  • ·         Child neglect and
  • ·         Untimely death of a loved one

Symptoms of PTSD

People with PTSD will often relieve the traumatic situation through nightmares, flashbacks, and sometimes will experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilty. The will always have problems of sleeping like find it difficult to concentrate or insomnia. The symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have important impact on the person daily life.

Treatments of PTSD

The main treatments for people with PTSD are psychotherapy, medications and everyone is different and it simply says treatment for another person may not work for other person. The people with PTSD should be treated by mental health care provider with experience. Some people with PTSD should try different treatments to test what works for their symptoms. The problem of couples in relationship will need both to be treated. The other problems recurring can include panic disorder, depression, substance abuse and suicidal.

Psychotherapy is talk therapy is talking with mental health professionals to treat mental illness and it can occur one-on-one or in group.The therapy treatment for PTSD lasts 6 -12 weeks, sometimes it could take more and friends and family supports can help in therapy. Many therapies will help more people with PTSD and some types targeted the symptoms of PTSD directly and others focused on social, family, job –related.
Others types of treatment can help people with PTSD and people should talk about treatment options and different therapy may be:
·         Use relaxation and anger control skills
·         Help people with identify and deal with guilty, shame and other feelings about the event.
·         Provide tips for better sleep diet and exercise habits.
·         Teach about trauma and its effects.
