How to mentor a leader



According mentoring growing leaders required short period of time within the organization is a challenge. This project speed of the need for innovations has increased and people are being shoved into positions of management and leadership in an ever increasing pace. But in past individual would learn skills and knowledge through training, education and experience and the organization could afford wait around for him/her to come to speed. Mentoring is the individual experience, knowledge, and or skills of a specific content area that is able, willing and available to share this with the individual.

There is no description how the mentor should have to be qualified, older, have qualification, grade level, or have been in the organization for a long period of time. The most important thing the mentor must have is experience, knowledge and skills that she/he wants to share with someone who needs them. The application of that knowledge is very much important.

Under the tutelage of the mentor the learner is given immediate access to valuable insights and past experiences. The individual learns by doing and able to practice what they are learning. Many organizations are struggling most of the training and developments budgets were cut and therefore trying to provide the necessary learning and development for managers and leaders was not only difficulty but sometimes impossible.

Mentoring relationships allows individual to learn while they doing in workplace or wherever they are. Mentoring is one of the most cost effective and efficient tools as an organization has for the development of its employee.

  • ·         Individual attention from someone who has great deal of knowledge and experience and degree of success and respect within the organization.
  • ·         Direct information and experiences from mentor which build a degree of confidence through guidance, assistance and support.
  • ·         The ability to practice obtained learning in his/her own job position as a mentor can illustrate specific learning transfer to real life experiences on the job.
  • ·         Champion that many times can provide clear direction to positions in the organization that interest and skills of the mentee.
  • The mentor only job is to help your mentee to gain experiences and knowledge and mentorship  brings best out of the people, how to recover from their mistakes and handles discipline.
