What is asthma?



Asthma is defined as chronic disease of the airways that makes breathing very difficult. There is inflammation of the air passages that result in temporary narrowing of the airways that carry oxygen to the lungs. It causes recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. In normal situation the coughing occurs at night or early in the morning. It attack and affects people of all ages but it starts during the childhood stages. The example in United States more than 25million people are known as having asthma and 7 million of these are children.

The Symptoms of Asthma


  • ·         Coughing especially at night
  • ·         Shortness of breath
  • ·         Chest tightness, pain or pressure
  • ·         Wheezing
  • ·         Feeling tired. Easily upset or moody
  • ·         Decreases or changes in lung function as measured on a peak flow meter
  • ·         Trouble in sleeping

  • ·         Feeling very tired or weak when exercising

Not every person with asthma has the same symptoms in the same way. It means you may not have all these symptoms or you may have different symptoms at different times. Some people with asthma may go for extended periods without having any symptoms interrupted by periodic worsened of their symptoms called asthma attacks. People will differ and others might have asthma symptoms every day and others may only have asthma during exercise or with viral infections like colds.

Causes of Asthma

Substances that cause allergies-mites, pollens, molds pet dander and cockroach droppings.
Irritants in the air-this include smoke from cigarettes,wood fires, or charcoal grills, and strong fumes like households sprays,paint,gasoline,perfumes and scented soaps and people are not allergic to these particles but they can aggravated inflame sensitive airways.
Respiratory infections- here we talked about colds, flu, sores throats and sinus infections
Exercise-these activities they will make you to breathe very hard especially in colds air and in continuation.
Weather- dry wind, cold air or sudden changes in weather can sometimes bring asthma episode.
Expressing strong emotions-like anger ear or excitement and this will caused by experiencing strong emotions your breathing will changes.
Medications-some medications like aspirin can be related to episodes in adults hi are sensitive to aspirin. Irritants in the environment can also bring on asthma episode the example is paint perfumes, smog aerosol sprays and perfumes.
